Michael is a patent attorney at Wong & Rees, LLP, and specializes in intellectual property law, with an emphasis in patent prosecution, intellectual property counseling, portfolio development, and strategic planning with a special emphasis on computer and software-based inventions. He primarily advises in the fields of databases, multimedia devices, social networking systems, wearable devices, Internet architecture, and user interface and user experience design. Michael was in-house patent counsel for Salesforce.com, Inc. and has assisted in the formation of in-house patent programs for several tech clients, large and small.
Ever since teaching himself the BASIC programming language on an Apple IIc Plus, Michael has been fascinated with technology and its rapid integration into how the world communicates. Active in several local and national organizations, Michael also sits on the board of GAPA (Gay Asian Pacific Alliance) as Chair, a social welfare nonprofit that envisions a world where a powerful Queer, Trans, Asian and Pacific Islander community is seen, heard, and celebrated. He also sits on the board of Livable City, a nonprofit that works to create a San Francisco of great streets and complete neighborhoods, where walking, bicycling, and transit are the best choices for most trips, where public spaces are beautiful, well-designed, and well-maintained, and where housing is more plentiful and more affordable. He also enjoys swimming, Ultimate Frisbee, karaoke, softball, and drag activism, performing as Juicy Liu in the Castro and on his podcast, JuicyThots.com.
