The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Barristers Club Diversity Committee and Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (“BALIF”) have partnered to create a new scholarship to promote diversity in the legal profession.

Diversity encompasses inclusion, acceptance, respect, and empowerment. This means understanding that each individual is unique and that our commonalities and differences make the contributions we have to offer all the more valuable. Diversity includes dimensions of race, ethnicity, and national and regional origin; religious or cultural background; sex, gender identity, and sexual orientation; and socioeconomic status, age, physical attributes, and abilities.

How to Apply:

The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Barristers Club Diversity Committee and BALIF seek to award this $2500 scholarship to a diverse law student with a demonstrated commitment to public service and financial need. The 2011 Diverse Voices Scholarship must be used to fund a summer position at a non-profit legal organization.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please submit: (1) a resume and three references, (2) a one-page personal statement that addresses how you intend to use the scholarship, and (3) what you see as a pressing concern facing your diverse constituency and how you see yourself contributing to or engaging in such an issue; or your contributions to or activism within your diverse constituency; or your experience(s) in overcoming socioeconomic and/or other barriers.

The applicant must disclose in their application whether he/she is receiving any other funding to support their work for the summer and any other sources of income.

The recipient of the scholarship will be recognized in July 2011 at the 2011 Diversity Reception, sponsored by the Barristers Club Diversity Committee.
Submission Deadline:

Proposals must be submitted electronically by 4:30 p.m. PST on Friday, May 13, 2011. Proposals must be in Microsoft Word or PDF format and follow the template included below. The Subject line should include “2011 Diverse Voices Scholarship – YOUR NAME”. Send proposals to Shirley Huey at shuey@rbg-law.com. The scholarship award will be made within the month of May.
