David Boies
Theodore B. Olson
The Legal Service Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of lawyers and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to LGBT equality and the rights of LGBT individuals, and that have significantly advanced those causes through their work in the law. This year BALIF is proud to recognize the work of David Boies and Theodore B. Olson, former adversaries in Bush v. Gore, and unlikely advocates for the LGBT community, who are leading a team of lawyers in a federal lawsuit to overturn Proposition 8.
Gay-Straight Alliance Network
With its Community Service Award, BALIF honors visionary individuals and organizations who work outside the legal community to effect positive change for LGBT persons. This year, BALIF proudly honors Gay-Straight Alliance Network for their pioneering work on behalf of the future of the LGBT community.
GSA Network was founded in 1998 to empower youth activists to start Gay-Straight Alliance clubs to fight homophobia and transphobia in schools. LGBT students and straight allies are empowered to organize GSA clubs to advocate for safer schools, mobilize peers to stand-up for equality, and train teachers to stop bullying.
BALIF is especially proud to honor four teens who embody the courage and hope that hallmark our fight for LGBT equality:
Alex Adsit
Logan Cuevas
Jason Galisatus
Askari Gonzalez

On the morning before the Pearl Party, the University of San Francisco Law Review presents its Symposium on "The Future of Same-Sex Marriage." Prominent scholars and practitioners will discuss the future of same-sex marriage from legal, political, and cultural perspectives from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Five plenary panels will examine topics such as empirical data regarding the material consequences of denying or recognizing same-sex marriage, and recent federal constitutional challenges to state bans of same-sex marriage.
